BEAUMONT – After registering a school record 13 touchdowns last season en route to being named the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, Lamar University’s Kevin Johnson was named to the 2013 Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Preseason All-America Third-Team at kick returner.
The Sports Network FCS Preseason All-America Team features three full squads represented by 98 players from 59 different schools and all 13 FCS conferences.
Johnson, whose 13 touchdowns tied the 1952 Lamar single season record of Sammy Carpenter, returned 22 kickoffs last season for 623 yards and two touchdowns. His 28.3 yards per return ranked third in the Southland Conference and the two scores tied for the league lead and matched the Lamar career record.
A native of Houston, Johnson added 19 receptions for 309 yards from his wide receiver position. More remarkable is that 10 of the 19 grabs went for touchdowns as Johnson tied Stephen F. Austin All-America Cordell Roberson for the conference lead in receiving scores.
Johnson tied the school record with four touchdowns and 24 points in Lamar’s 52-21 victory over McMurry last season. The redshirt junior finished with five catches for 77 yards and three touchdowns and added an 88-yard kickoff return for his other score.
Johnson recorded a season-long 89-yard kickoff return for a score against Sam Houston State. The Oklahoma State transfer earned honorable mention all-conference honors last season at both kick returner and wide receiver.
Johnson, who also scored one rushing touchdown last year, became the first player in school history to have a pair of three-touchdown receiving games in the same season.
