CHARLESTSON, S.C. -
Lamar sophomore kicker Alex Ball has been named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Preseason Watch List announced CFPA executive director Brad Smith.
Ball took over the starting role at kicker midway through the 2013 season and never looked back. Taking over for one of the school's all-time leading scorers, Ball became an immediate weapon for Lamar. A perfect 20-of-20 on point after tries, Ball proved he had one of the stronger legs in the Southland despite his rookie status.
The California native, drilled a 41-yard field goal as time was running out to secure the come-from-behind victory over rival Stephen F. Austin. The field goal not only iced LU's first win over the Lumberjacks since returning the sport to varsity status, but also was the exclamation point on a career night for Ball. He finished the game with a career-high 16 points, and was named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts.
Ball's performance against SFA was one of many records set during the 2013 season for the Cardinals. Ball's game-winning kick as time expired was his fourth of the night setting a new LU single-game record for made field goals.
Ball finished the season a perfect 7-of-7 on field-goal attempts. His perfect season also included some impressive kicks against nationally ranked foes. Ball drilled a 42-yard attempt against Central Arkansas, and a career-long 47 yarder against Sam Houston State.
The Cardinals are slated to open the 2014 campaign Saturday, Aug. 30th against Grambling State. The game will kick at 7 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. Tickets can be purchased through the Lamar Ticket Office at (409) 880-1715.
