BEAUMONT, Texas – Led by first-team selections Kevin Johnson and Jermaine Longino, the Lamar University football team was well represented on Phil Steele’s Preseason All-Southland Conference team.
Johnson, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior, was named first-team at wide receiver and earned a second-team nod as a kick returner. The Houston native is coming off a 13-score season for the Cardinals in 2012 which tied the school’s single-season record for touchdowns.
Longino (5-10, 220) is a senior out of Houston who started all 12 games last season on his way to honorable mention all-conference accolades. The linebacker tied for the Southland lead with 107 total tackles, adding two sacks and three forced fumbles.
Four Cardinals earned second-team honors from the publication. Senior wide receiver Barry Ford (6-1, 175) represented Lamar on the offensive side of the ball, while defensive stars James Washington (5-11, 225) and Branden Thomas (5-9, 170) were also recognized. Both seniors, Washington plays linebacker for Lamar and Thomas is a cornerback.
Lamar’s final honoree is senior punter Kollin Kahler (6-2, 200) on the second-team. Kahler, who earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 honors last year, holds the school record with a career punting average of 40.8 yards per punt.
Lamar’s 12-game regular season begins on Aug. 31 when Oklahoma Panhandle State pays a visit to Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Cards’ first Southland Conference home game will be Oct. 19 when Central Arkansas comes in for homecoming. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
