BEAUMONT, Texas -
Lamar football fans from across the Golden Triangle gathered at the Montagne Center Sunday evening for the annual Football Kickoff Banquet. The annual event gives Cardinals' fans an opportunity to meet the current LU coaches and players.
One of only a handful of coaches to win an NCAA Championship and a Super Bowl ring, Barry Switzer served as the guest speaker Sunday evening. Elected to College Football Hall of Fame in 2002, Switzer remains Oklahoma's all-time winning coach, guiding the Sooners to three National Championships.
Switzer was named the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1994. The following season Switzer guided the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory over Pittsburgh. He remained with the Cowboys through the 1997 season.
The Cardinals will open the 2014 campaign Saturday against Grambling State. The game against the Tigers is slated to kick off at 7 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium. The Cardinals return 46 letterwinners and 14 starters from last year's squad that set nearly 50 school records.
The Cardinals open the year with four of their first five games at home, with the lone road contest at Texas A&M (Sept. 6th). Lamar's stretch of consecutive home games will extend all the way into the beginning of Southland Conference play.
