BEAUMONT, Texas -
Junior quarterback Caleb Berry has been named College Sports Madness Southland Conference Player of the Week for his performance against Nicholls State Saturday evening. Lamar knocked off Nicholls State to end a three-game skid and improve to 4-5 on the season, and 1-3 in Southland play.
Berry racked up 360 yards of total offense for the Cardinals. He finished the night completing 28-of-37 (.757) passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns. He also carried the ball 10 times for 31 yards.
In a night of record-setting performances, Berry notched the first for Lamar. His second touchdown pass gave him 22 for the season setting a new LU single-season mark. The previous record was set by Larry Haynes during the 1979 season. The Cardinals finished the night with 421 yards of total offense and 56 points. The 56-point outburst was the most points scored by a Cardinal team against any conference opponent in school history.
Berry's five-touchdown performance against the Colonels is the third-best single-game performance in school history. His five TD passes are the most since he started the season by setting the record with six against Oklahoma Panhandle State. It was the fourth time this season that Berry has recorded at least four touchdown passes in a game. He has thrown for at least 300 yards twice in the past three weeks, and three times this season. Berry just missed a 300-yard performance against Southeastern Louisiana by one yard.
Lamar enters the game against Northwestern State needing only one more win to tie the record for wins in a season since bringing back the football program. The Cardinals won five games in 2010. Saturday's game in Natchitoches will be Lamar's final road game of the 2013 season.
