Lamar's Kevin Johnson has been name College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Punt Returner of the Week announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith Monday afternoon. It marks the second time this season Johnson has been awarded the national weekly superlative.
"Kevin is just an extremely talented young man," said head coach Ray Woodard. "You can see what he can do in the return game when he has fresh legs. When Kevin gets the ball he's got another gear. When we need a spark he can provide it."
The Cardinals were trailing Northwestern State, 14-7, when he returned a punt 52 yards for a score to tie the game early in the second quarter. Johnson finished the game with 144 all-purpose yards. It is the second time this season that Johnson has returned a punt for a score. His 48-yard return against Grambling State turned the momentum as Lamar rallied for 27 unanswered points to defeat the Tigers 27-16 in the first month of the season.
Johnson is one of only four players nationally to have returned two punts for scores. He currently ranks second nationally averaging 18 yards per return. One of the school's all-time leaders in points, Johnson has scored touchdowns rushing, receiving, returning a kick and returning a punt during his two seasons with Lamar.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host Stephen F. Austin. The game against the Lumberjacks is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium.
