Senior slot receiver Marcus Jackson became Lamar University's second football player to earn Southland Conference Player of the Week recognition this season, the league office announced Monday morning.
Jackson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder from Tyler Lee High School by way of Navarro College, won the balloting of the league's sports information directors for Special Teams Player of the Week on the basis of his sterling performance in the Cardinals' 34-26 victory over Nicholls on Saturday night.
Jackson returned three kickoffs for a total of 123 yards against Nicholls. Easily, the gem of his handiwork, however, was a 78-yard return he took for a touchdown to force a 7-7 tie early in the second quarter.
Jackson also caught five passes for 64 yards, including a 14-yarder for an early fourth-quarter touchdown in the win that ended a five-game losing skid.
Lamar's other SLC Player of the Week this season was quarterback Andre Bevil for his four-touchdown passing effort in the Cardinals' 48-38 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Oct. 1.
The conference's other honorees after the 11th week of play this season were Central Arkansas quarterback Nathan Dick as Offensive Player of the Week and Sam Houston State University safety Darnell Taylor as Defensive Player of the Week. Dick threw for a career-high 457 yards in the Bears' 23-22 non-conference victory over Texas State, while Taylor had a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Bearkats' 43-17 victory over Northwestern State.
Jackson, who has now caught 63 passes for 1,116 yards in 19 games as a Cardinal, was also honored Monday as the College Football Performance Awards National Kickoff Returner of the Week.
Also, Lamar cornerback Adrian Guillory was the recipient Monday of the College Football Performance Awards National Punt Returner of the Week award. The 5-10 junior from Beaumont Central by way of Navarro College snagged a blocked punt by teammate Payton Ploch and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown midway in the third quarter.
Receiving honorable mention this week from the SLC for the Cardinals were senior split end J.J. Hayes
for Offensive Player of the Week and senior linebacker Asim Hicks
for Defensive Player of the Week.
