Former Ping All-America Dusty Smith begins his third season as an assistant coach with his alma mater, having helped Lamar University to several impressive finishes as both a player and coach.

During Smith's first two years on the coaching staff, the Lamar men's team won the 2009 Southland Conference Championship, while the Lady Cardinals picked up four tournament victories.

Five Cardinal golfers have earned all-conference honors during Smith's short coaching tenure, including the 2009 SLC Freshman of the Year, Xavier Fayaerts. Three Lady Cardinal golfers have earned All-SLC laurels since 2009, with Therese Nilsson being named the 2009 SLC Academic Student-Athlete of the Year for women's golf.

A native of The Woodlands, Smith earned honorable mention Ping All-America honors as a junior after tying for 10th at the NCAA Championships. The following year, Smith earned All-Southland Conference honors for the third time as Lamar finished third at the NCAA Championships.

Smith, who helped The Woodlands HS win the 2002 Class 5A state championship, is a 2007 graduate of Lamar with a degree in business administration.
