Over the last nine years the Lamar golf program has undergone many changes but one thing has remained constant - coach Brian White. After six years as the assistant men's coach and head women's coach, White assumed the head role of both programs in the summer of 2006. With SLC Championships in each of the last three seasons, including the 2007 and 2008 titles via record-setting margins of 33 and 28 strokes, respectively, he has led Lamar to four-consecutive crowns. A 1989 graduate of Lamar University with a bachelor of business administration in economics, White has coached 33 all-SLC performers, three freshmen of the year's, two newcomers of the year and seven PING All-Americas, while being named coach of the year twice. He has also been instrumental in the resurgence of the men's program that has resulted in nine-consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and SLC titles from 2001-03 and 2006-09. The Cards advanced to the NCAA Championship in 2006, for the first time since 1986, where they tied for ninth place and again in 2007 where they tied for third. After spending the last six years as an assistant coach, Brian White was elevated to head coach in July 2006. "We are fortunate to have a coach of his caliber to keep the continuity of the program," said director of athletics Billy Tubbs in announcing White's promotion. "We are very happy to have him." White, who has served as the primary coach of the women's program, has guided the Lady Cardinals to Southland Conference championships in 2003, 2005 and 2006. He was named SLC Coach of the Year in 2005. He has mentored four players who have combined to win a league-high 10 first team all-SLC honors, including recent standout Therese Nilsson who was named the 2008-09 Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Women's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year. She was the first four-time all-conference performer in league history and joined former Lady Cardinal Casey Cain as two of the three student-athletes to pick up academic all-SLC three times. Lamar leads all SLC programs on the women's side with 20 all-conference selections (first or second team) since the league began sponsoring the sport in 2002. White, who started his collegiate golf career at Texas Tech in 1985, played for the Cardinals from 1986-89. A native of Beaumont, White played professionally from 1991-96 on the Hooters Tour and the Texas Tour. He was the Head Professional at the Beaumont Country Club. He is currently in private business in addition to his coaching duties at Lamar. |
