LOS CABOS, Mexico -
After a sluggish opening round, the Lamar men's golf team rallied to finish in a two-way tie for 10th Tuesday afternoon at the Querencia Cabos Collegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico. Led by junior Gustaf Burenstam who fired a four-under par in the final 36 holes, the Cardinals rallied to finish in a two-way tie for 10th with Mississippi. Lamar finishes the three-day tournament with a 307-294-297 - 898 on the par 72 course.
"Clearly, we have to become a more consistent team," said head coach Brian White. "Even one bad round will hurt you against teams this talented. I was really proud of how Gustaf battled back after a tough first day. He played really well in the final two rounds."
Burenstam continued his climb up leaderboard Tuesday posting his second consecutive round under par. After opening the tournament six strokes over par, Burenstam finished tied for 12th with a two-over 218. He closed out the tournament with a 69 and 71 in the final two rounds just missing the overall top 10.
Zander Gous carded the team's second-lowest score, but finished the day nine strokes back of Burenstam. Gous recorded a three-round 77-74-76 - 227 to place 47th.
Sophomore Gregory Wiggins had the team's highest score after the opening day, but settled down and finished the tournament with Lamar's third-lowest score. Wiggins finished tied for 55th with an 84-79-77 - 232.
Wiggins finished just a stroke ahead of freshman Louis Bemberg who was tied for 58th with a 76-79-77 - 232. Newcomer Man Berglund was unable to overcome a rough middle round. He was tied with Bemberg after the opening day of competition, but closed out the tournament with an 82-75 to place 62nd.
The Cardinals return to action Monday when they travel Murrells Inlet, S.C., to compete in the General Hackler Championships. The General Hackler Championships is a two-day three-round event that will play 54 holes on Monday.
