PALM CITY, Fla. -
The Lamar men's golf team was unable to improve upon its second-round 288 Tuesday afternoon closing out the 2014 Valspar Collegiate with a 299-288-311 - 898 to finish 15th overall. The Cardinals struggled down the stretch having three golfers finish the day with a seven-over par, or higher, score on the par 72 Floridian Golf Course.
"This was a very tough field that we faced today," said head coach Brian White. "You will be hard pressed to find another tournament with as many nationally ranked programs. When you play in a tournament like this you can't afford to make mistakes. We had some opportunities but just gave away too many strokes."
Freshman Zander Gous was one of three Lamar golfers to tie for the team's top spot. Gous was able to hold that position despite firing a 79 in the final 18 holes. Junior Luke Jerling entered the final round of action with a one-under 143, only to see his efforts come undone in Tuesday's final round. Jerling closed out the tournament with a nine-over 81 to fall back into a three-way lead for the team's top spot. Senior Stephane Dubois was the team's most consistent golfer in Florida. He finished the three-rounds with a 74-74-76 - 224. The trio finished the tournament tied for 62nd overall.
Junior Gustaf Burenstam recorded the team's fourth-lowest round. He finished the day with a 78-76-75 - 229 to place 70th on the individual leaderboard. Burenstam finished the tournament four strokes ahead of freshman Louis Bemberg (79-73-81 - 233). Bemberg's score placed him tied for 74th on the individual leaderboard.
The Cardinals will take three weeks to prepare for the Wofford Invitational. The tournament in Spartanburg, S.C., will be the team's final tournament before traveling to McKinney, Texas for the Southland Conference Championships.
