BATON ROUGE, La. - Paced by sophomore Ryan Kornmann, the Lamar men's golf team is in 10th place following Friday's opening round at the LSU Spring Invitational at University Golf Club.
Kornmann, a Kingwood native, shot an opening round of even-par 72, posting a 37 on the front-nine and a 35 on the back-nine, and is tied for sixth place. Patrick Sullivan of Arkansas-Little Rock holds the first round lead following a 3-under par 69. Tyrone Mordt of Texas-Arlington is second at 2-under 70.
Freshman Dawie Van Der Walt and sophomore Dusty Smith are tied for 28th place following first round 3-over par 75s for the Cardinals. Senior Andre Metzger posted an opening round 5-over 77 and is tied for 55th. Senior Shawn Stefani is tied for 67th after opening with a 78.
Host LSU is in a three-way tie with UTA and UALR following opening rounds of 292. Furman is fourth at 293 and South Alabama is fifth at 294 to round out the top five in the 17-team field. Lamar posted an opening round of 299, which is only seven shots off the lead.
The invitational continues today with another 18 holes and the final 18 holes in the 54-hole event is scheduled for Sunday.
