McKINNEY, Texas - The Lamar men's golf team fell three places on the leaderboard late Monday afternoon to close out the opening round the 2014 Southland Conference Championships in sixth, a stroke out of fourth. The Cardinals fired a 12-over 300 on the par 72 Stonebridge Ranch Country Club course in McKinney, Texas.

Sitting in fourth, only a stroke back of Southeastern Louisiana, Lamar made a small surge to pick up two strokes and jump ahead of the Lions as they made the turn for the back nine. The one-stroke lead over the Lions didn't last long as the Cardinals struggled down the back nine. Lamar closed out the day recording 11 bogeys and three doubles.

"Although we didn't play great on the front nine we were in the mix but struggled to bring it home today," said head coach Brian White. "We missed too many shots down the back and put ourselves in a really bad position. This tournament has a long way to go, but we have a dug ourselves an early hole that we have to play out of. The most important thing now is to forget about this round, get a good night's rest and come back ready tomorrow.

"These guys know they can overcome a start like this. They only need to look to last week where they overcame a bigger deficit in the final round to win," added White.

Senior Stephane Dubois is trying to extend his collegiate career, as he led Lamar firing an even-par round. Dubois ended the day tied for fifth only four strokes off the leader.

The Cardinals were unable to lock any other players around Dubois' score, as sophomore Gregory Wiggins fired the team's second-lowest round but was three strokes back of Dubois. Wiggins' three-over 75 currently has him tied for 15th with two rounds to play. Wiggins ended the day a stroke up on junior Gustaf Burenstam who carded a four-over 76. Burenstam surrendered four strokes on holes 14-17 but battled back to close out his round with a birdie on 18. Burenstam enters Tuesday's round tied for 18th.

Freshmen Louis Bemberg and Zander Gous each finished the day with a five-over 77. The LU duo enters Tuesday's second round of action tied for 27th overall.

The Cardinals are slated to tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday from Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. Lamar will be paired up with Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin.
