AUSTIN, Texas - For the second-consecutive day the Lamar men's golf team had a mid-round stumble before finishing strong and sits in sixth place after two rounds of the NCAA Men's Golf Austin Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club.
Lamar's 296-298--594 score is the fourth-lowest team two-day total at an NCAA Regional in school history.
Texas and Texas Tech currently lead the 13-team field at 576 and 578, respectively, with Florida alone in third at 580. UNLV is fourth at 585 and Stanford is fifth at 593, just one stroke ahead of Lamar for the final qualifying spot to the NCAA Championship.
The four-hole stretch near the end of the front nine reached up and bit the Cards again on Friday, as they played Nos. 5-8 at a combined nine-over par. LU was 11-over through that quartet of holes on Thursday.
With two Cardinals having made the turn, Lamar found itself tied for 11th at 25-over before regrouping following the tough stretch. LU played the back nine one-under as team, allowing the Cards to creep back up the leaderboard while the schools that started the day on No. 10, came home on the toughest part of the course in windier conditions.
"We haven't played well and we keep making too many mistakes with easy giveaways," LU head coach Brian White said. "The tough thing about tomorrow will be that we need to pass a very good Stanford team and there are six teams behind us that are within ten shots. But it should be some fun golf to watch."
Texas' Lance Lopez leads the individual race at 68-70--139. He holds a three-shot edge over Eddie Olson of UNLV at 72-69--141.
Senior Hugues Joannes, who shared the first round lead following his 3-under 68, managed just two birdies on Friday and moved into a tie for third place with a 68-74--142 even-par total. That marks the fourth-lowest 36-hole score by an individual at an NCAA Regional in school history.
Senior Leroux Ferriera also posted a 3-over 74 and is tied for 28th at 75-74--149.
Senior Justin Harding sliced three strokes off his first round 77 to post a 74 for Lamar's low round of the day. He is tied for 36th at 151.
Freshman Kevin Hesbois got stuck in a rut when he bogeyed his first six holes before playing the final 12 holes at one-under to put himself into a tie for 42nd at 76-76--152. He finished the day with a birdie on No. 18 when he made a 20-foot, downhill putt from the fringe.
Xavier Feyaerts's second-round 79 gave him a 159 total through 36 holes. The freshman played the final seven holes at even par, but it was a triple-bogey on the ninth and a double bogey on the 11th that pushed his score to eight-over where he finished.
The top five teams and the highest placing individual not on one of those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, set for May 26-30 in Toledo, Ohio, at the Inverness Club.
The Cardinals will be paired with UNLV and Stanford for the second-consecutive day in Saturday's final round. The first pairing of those teams will tee-off on No. 1 at 8:50 a.m.
