AUSTIN, Texas - The Lamar men's golf team shot the fifth-lowest round of the day but missed out on advancing to the NCAA Championships by three strokes following their 891 three-day total in the NCAA Austin Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club on Saturday.
When the Cardinals finished around 5 p.m. Central time, they were alone in sixth place after a final round 297, needing Michigan to drop at least four strokes over its final eight holes to force a playoff for the final spot in the championship. But the Wolverines played their final segment of holes at one-over to finish alone in fifth at 888.
Junior Hugues Joannes finished in a tie for fourth at 216 and by virtue of being the highest-finishing individual not on one of the top five teams, advanced to the NCAA Championship, held May 26-30, at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. After falling to three-over through seven holes, he posted 11-consecutive pars to remain in the top five.
This will mark his second appearance at the championship in his three seasons of college golf. As a freshman at Abilene Christian in 2007, he finished tied for 14th while leading the Wildcats to a tie for eighth overall in the Division II Championship.
Senior Leroux Ferriera closed out his career with a 74 and tied for 18th with a 222 total. Senior Justin Harding completed play in his third regional in four years with a 76 to put him in a tie for 37th at 226.
Lamar's two freshmen closed out their first regional tournament as well. Kevin Hesbois tied for 41s at 227 after he posted a 75 - his lowest round of the week on Saturday. Xavier Feyaerts joined Ferriera as the two Lamar players who improved their score each round in Austin, concluding with a 77 for a 236 total that placed him in 64th position.
Florida came from third place to win the regional with a 874 total, 10-over. Texas Tech was second at 876, Texas was third at 877 and Stanford was fourth at 887. Michigan's final round of 292 was the lowest of the day.
Texas' Lance Lopez, who shared the first round lead with Joannes, completed the wire-to-wire victory with a 209, four-under and five shots ahead of runner-up Billy Horschel of Florida. Chris Ward of Texas Tech was third at 215 and Joannes was joined at 216 by Nils Floren of Texas Tech and Dodge Kemmer of Stanford.
