ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
Senior Stephane Dubois carded a four-under par 67 Tuesday morning to lead the Lamar Cardinal golf team to a second-place finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate. The Cardinals finished the season-opener with a one-over par 288-285-280 - 853 on the par-71 U-M Golf Course, edging out tournament host Michigan by three strokes.
"I'm very happy with how we played this week," said head coach Brian White. "There were some very good teams at this tournament and we put ourselves in a position to win, but we just came up a little short. I think this is a very strong opener for us, and we can really take this victory and build from it."
The Cardinals were one of four teams to record a low round of 280 on the final day of action, but unfortunately Michigan State posted an identical score. The Spartans edged out Lamar by only two strokes (851 -1).
Dubois carded a three-round 69-74-67 - 210 to finish the tournament tied for third at three-under par. Dubois posted two sub-par rounds, which were two of Lamar's seven par or better rounds from the two-day event.
Junior Luke Jerling joined Dubois in the top 10. He closed out the tournament with an even-par round to finish in a seven-way tie for ninth. He carded a 75-68-71 - 214 in the three rounds. Freshman Louis Bemberg bookended a 77 with two very strong rounds. He opened play Monday with a 69, and was able to follow up his six-over in the second round with a one-under par 70 Tuesday morning to finish tied for 16th overall.
Sophomore Gregory Wiggins and junior Gustav Burenstam finished tied for 28th with 220. Wiggins fired a 72-76-72 - 220, while Burenstam carded a 76-70-74.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they travel to Lake Forest, Ill., to compete in the Windon Memorial Classic. The Windon Memorial Classsic is a two-day event that will run through Monday.
