Lamar Posts Best Round Since 2007 NCAAs To Finish 7th At Baylor Intercollegiate
Oct. 27, 2009
DALLAS - Led by season low rounds from sophomore MJ Daffue and freshman Pierre-Alexis Rolland, the Lamar men's golf team finished seventh at the Baylor Intercollegiate following a 276 for its lowest round in three years.
The Cardinals found themselves in tenth place following the completion of the second round, but rallied down the stretch to conclude the day at 5-under with a season-best 54-hole score of 874. LU's jump from tenth to seventh was the largest by any team in the field. Only tournament champion Texas A&M and runner-up SMU had lower single-round totals over the entire 12-team field as they shot 273 and 275, respectively over the final 18.
"It was nice to finish the way we are accustomed to playing but we need more consistency throughout the line-up on a regular basis," Lamar head coach Brian White said
Rolland carded a final-round 69 to finish at 216 (3-over) and in a tie for 14th place. Both figures matched his season-low from the Gopher Invitational in mid-Sept. when he tied for seventh on a par 72 layout.
"Pierre played solid all tournament and if it hadn't been for some putting errors at the end of his first two rounds he would have finished much higher," White said.
Daffue posted the low round of his LU career with a 5-under-par 65, which featured six birdies and an eagle on the 551-yard par 5 fifth. That was one of just four eagles in the entire tournament.
Sophomore Kevin Hesbois carded his second-consecutive 1-over 72 to finish in 29th place at 220. After a pair of 76s to start the tourney, senior Hugues Joannes turned in a 1-under 70 on Tuesday to move up 15 spots into a tie for 36th at 222.
Sophomore Xavier Feyaerts had a 229 total to tie for 53rd pace. He did record 40 pars over the 54 holes for the second-highest total in the 66-player field.
Lamar will conclude its fall schedule at the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle, Nov. 8-10, at CordeValle CC in San Martin, Calif.
