NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Lamar Cardinals fired a 286 in the final round of the Gifford Collegiate Tuesday afternoon at Pelican Hill's North Golf Course in Newport Beach, Calif. Lamar recorded a three-round 286-285-286 - 857 finishing seventh on the team leaderboard only five strokes back of tournament host No. 14 UCLA. Top-ranked Alabama won the event with a four-under par 836.

"I thought we did a good job of staying focused throughout the tournament," said head coach Brian White. "Our guys were prepared to play both days and did a good job of competing with some of the top teams in the country. This was an extremely tough field. We can build from this as we head into a break before the spring season."

Lamar placed its top four golfers among the leaderboard's top 25 led by junior Gustaf Burenstam. A native of Sweden, Burenstam carded a one-over 71 Tuesday to finish the tournament tied 17th overall with a two-over 212. Freshman Louis Bemberg recorded his second consecutive one-over par round Tuesday to finish the tournament with a five-over 215 (T21st).

Senior Stephane Dubois and junior Luke Jerling were only a stroke back of Bemberg on the leaderboard. The Cardinal duo finished tied for 25th with a six-over 216. Dubois closed out the tournament with his third-consecutive two-over par round, while Jerling shot his highest round of the week (74).

Sophomore Gregory Wiggins recorded his best round of the of the two days, but was unable to overcome his struggles from Monday. Wiggins finished tied for 45th with a 224.

 

 

Lamar's next competition will be during the spring it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Gator Invitational. The two-day tournament is slated to begin Saturday, Feb. 15th.
