BEAUMONT, Texas -
A three-time All-American, former Lamar Cardinal Dawie Van Der Walt guided LU to two top-10 national finishes during his time in Beaumont. As a professional, van der Walt is achieving a similar level of success. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, van der Walt won the 2013 Nelson Mandela Championship last month to claim his second European Championship of the year.
Making the victory more special for van der Walt was the timing of the tournament. Coming just days after the passing of Mandela, the tournament was moved up a day so the final round could be played on Saturday, 24 hours prior to the funeral of the former South African president.
Van der Walt began the final round three strokes back of the second-round leader, Daniel Brooks, but quickly rallied in the final round. Van der Walt carded a 66 in the final round (-15 for the tournament), while Brooks surrendered six strokes on the first seven holes and finished day with a 76. The final round 66 was good enough to overcome Matthew Baldwin and Jorge Campillo who both fired a 59 in the second round.
