LAREDO - With the Southland Conference Tournament one month away, the Lamar University golf team will play each of the next four weekends in preparation, beginning with the Border Olympics from the Laredo Country Club on Friday morning.
The 54-hole tournament will open with the first two rounds on Friday and will conclude on Saturday with the final 18 holes. The 19-team field will be playing on the par-72, 7,125-yard layout.
Along with Lamar, Texas State, UT Arlington and UTSA will be representing the Southland Conference at the tournament. Four teams ranked among the top 40 in the nation will also be playing in No. 18 Arkansas, No. 26 Oklahoma, No. 28 Indiana and No. 37 North Texas.
At last year's event, the SLC was well represented as Texas State won the tournament, Lamar finished third and UT Arlington was fourth. Host Houston placed 14th last year.
Current LU junior M.J. Daffue tied for fourth at last year's tournament with a three-round total of 217 (+1), just four strokes behind defending champion Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor. Sophomore Pierre-Alexis Rolland, who will be playing this year as well, tied for eighth a year ago at three-over-par.
