BEAUMONT – Lamar University senior Erik Knudsen and junior Stephane Dubois capped strong years by being named to the 2013 Southland Conference Men’s Golf All-Academic Team, announced by the league office Tuesday.

Both players earned second-team all-conference honors as Lamar placed third at the Southland Conference Tournament last month.

A native of Brantford, Ontario, Dubois carries the highest grade point average on the all-academic team with a 3.68 in general studies. A Wisconsin transfer two seasons ago, Dubois led the Cardinals with a 74.38 strokes per round scoring average this year. His scoring average improved to 73.72 in the spring as he closed his year with four top 20 finishes.

Dubois placed 11th at the Southland Conference Tournament and carded a season-low round of 67 at Stanford’s US Intercollegiate. A member of the 2012 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Dubois has been named to the Lamar President’s List with a perfect 4.00 GPA.

Knudsen graduated Saturday with a 3.41 GPA in exercise science. A native of Pocketvalley, Norway, Knudsen finished just behind Dubois with a 74.71 scoring average. Knudsen, who finished eighth at the conference tournament, tied for sixth at the 2013 Bayou City Collegiate Championships for his best career finish.

A three-year letterwinner, Knudsen helped the Cardinals win the 2012 Southland Conference Tournament and advance to NCAA Regional play. While at the Greensboro Regional, Knudsen closed with a final round 71 as Lamar finished fourth to qualify for last year’s NCAA Championships. A two-time Commissioner’s Honor Roll member, Knudsen has been named to the Lamar Dean’s List five times with a GPA of 3.50 or better.

Central Arkansas’ Pep Angles, who was the 2013 Southland Conference Golfer of the Year, was also honored Tuesday as the Student-Athlete of the Year. Southeastern Louisiana’s Rhys West and Grady Brame round out the all-academic team.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
