RUMFORD, R.I. - Lamar men's golfer Dawie Van Der Walt is in 81st place following an opening round of 78 Thursday at the 44th Northeastern Amateur at Wannamoisett Country Club.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Van Der Walt carded a 39 on the front-nine and a 39 on the back-nine for a 9-over par 78. His round included one birdie, eight bogeys and one double bogey.
Chris Kirk and Matt Every are tied for the 18-hole lead after carding opening rounds of 3-under par 66. Kirk's round included three birdies and no bogeys. Every posted four birdies and one bogey in his round. There are six players tied for second at 2-under par.
The Northeastern Amateur is a 72-hole event with no cut. The tournament, which is an invitation event, is played on the par-69, 6,661-yard Wannamoisett Country Club course. Past winners of the event include current PGA Tour players Luke Donald (2000, 2001), Chris Nallen (2003), Brad Elder (1997), Notah Begay III (1995), David Duval (1992), Hal Sutton (1980).
