RUMFORD, R.I. - Lamar men's golfer Dawie Van Der Walt shot a final round 2-under par 67 in Sunday's final round to finish in a tie for 60th place at the Northeast Amateur Championship at Wannamoisett Country Club.
Van Der Walt's final round included three birdies and one bogey for his 2-under 67, which was his best round of the tournament. He posted a 72-hole score of 9-over par 78-68-72-67--285 and finished in a four-way tie for 60th place with Erik Olson, Tom Davis and Mark Anderson.
A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Van Der Walt played the final three rounds of the event at even-par after opening with a 9-over par 78. Kyle Reifers won the championship with a 72-hole score of 8-uner par 268. Bill Hurley, who shot a final round 4-under par 65, and Michael Sim tied for second at 5-under 271.
Van Der Walt's roller coaster tournament included shooting a 9-over 78 on Thursday, a 1-under 68 on Friday, a 3-over 72 on Saturday and a 2-under 67 on Sunday. His 3-over par round on Saturday included two birdies, three bogeys, two double-bogeys and an eagle. His eagle was a three on the par-5 18th hole. For the tournament, he posted one eagle, 10 birdies, 15 bogeys and three double-bogeys. He was 4-over on the par 3s, 6-over on the par 4s, and 1-under on the par 5s.
