LEWISTON, N.Y. - Dawie Van Der Walt, who will be a junior on the Lamar University men's golf team this fall, tied for 18th place following Saturday's final round at the 48th annual Porter Cup played at Niagara Falls Country Club (Par-70, 6,621-yards).
After opening with rounds of 74 and 71, Van Der Walt played the final two rounds at 4-under par to finish in a tie for 18th place with a 72-hole score of 1-over par 281. Seung-su Han won the event at 10-under 270 and Andrew Parr and Richard Berkmeyer, Jr. tied for second at 8-under 272.
Van Der Walt rallied for a 3-under par 67 in Friday's third round. He birdied the first three holes and totaled five on the front-nine to make the turn at 2-under 33. He made two more on the back-nine in firing a 1-under 34.
A Ping All-American who helped Lamar post a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, Van Der Walt shot a final round 1-under 69. He posted three birdies on the front-nine to make the turn at 2-under 33 for the second straight day. He posted two more birdies on the back-nine, but had his round slowed by a triple-bogey on the par-4 14th hole.
Van Der Walt will continue his summer amateur at the U.S. Amateur Aug. 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. He automatically qualified for the U.S. Amateur after advancing to the quarterfinals in last year's event. Ryan Kornmann, who will be a senior for the Cardinals this fall, qualified for the U.S. Amateur last week at Lake Charles Country Club.
