The Lamar men's golf team will be in Newport Beach, Calif. Monday to open the 2013 Gifford Collegiate Championship in Newport Beach, Calif. The tournament is slated to begin Monday at 7 a.m. (Pacific time) from the 6,985-yard par-70 Pelican Hill North Course. The teams are schedule to play 36 holes Monday and will close with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.

"This is going to be a tough tournament," said head coach Brian White. "There are some very talented teams from across the country making their way to California to compete in the Gifford Collegiate. It is important for us to close out the fall season strong as we prepare for the spring portion of the schedule."

The Gifford Collegiate will consist of a 10-team field. In addition to Lamar, the competition field will include host UCLA, Alabama, Coastal Carolina, Oregon, Northwestern, SMU, Tennessee, USC, Washington.

For the previous eight years, the Gifford Collegiate was played at the CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif. It will now alternate between CordeValle and Pelican Hill.

The Cardinals are coming off a top-10 performance at the David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La. Lamar recorded its best round of the tournament on the final day of action in Baton Rouge to jump into the top 10. LU was led by freshman Louis Bemberg who fired an eight-over 224.

The trip to California will be Lamar's final competition of the fall semester. Lamar will return to action Saturday Feb. 15, when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Gator Invitational.
