FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -
The Lamar University men's tennis team evened its record at 4-4 on the season with a 6-1 non-conference win over UMKC (1-9) at the University of Arkansas on Monday.
Lamar's Rob Lee won his second consecutive match at No. 1 singles with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 triumph over Grant Fleming. Denis Ermilov, Carlos Valdenebro, Bruno Snyder and Mikko Rajamaki also won at singles for the Cardinals.
"We started great by winning the first set in all six singles matches," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "When the guys put themselves in a manageable situation, I believe good things will happen."
Lamar opened the match by taking the doubles point. Valdenebro and Denis Ermilov teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles, while Rajamaki and Snyder won at the No. 3 spot.
"We played very solid in both doubles and singles," Shankles said. "We did a great job holding serve throughout doubles. That proved to be the difference."
The Cardinals face No. 43 Arkansas at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
"Overall, I'm very pleased with how we played today," Shankles said. "Now we will have to play better against nationally ranked Arkansas."
