BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar University men's tennis team climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 5-0 rain-shortened win over visiting Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a non-conference match Thursday.
Lamar (6-5) won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and was leading in the sixth match when rain halted play. No doubles competition was played.
"The guys showed great focus today," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "It feels great to be above .500 for the first time this year."
Winning for Lamar in singles play were Rob Lee, Denis Ermilov, Marton Horvath, Carlos Valdenebro and Mikko Rajamaki. Bruno Snyder was leading at No. 5 singles when the match was halted.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff dropped to 2-6.
The Cardinals open their Southland Conference schedule at noon Sunday by hosting Nicholls.
"We worked on a few things to get us ready for conference play on Sunday," Shankles said. "Our confidence is as high as it needs to be heading into conference play. I'm looking forward to Sunday against Nicholls."
The Lamar women also host Nicholls at noon Sunday in a conference match. Admission to all home Lamar tennis matches is free.
