BEAUMONT – Nicholls fought its way to a tough doubles point on Friday afternoon, and it would propel them through singles as the Lamar men’s tennis team fell 7-0 to the Colonels at Thompson Family Tennis Center.

After the tandem of Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Trey Crysel fell 8-2 on Court 3 to Evan Karatzas and Nico Mertens, the team of Juuso Laitinen and Steven McMullan got the Cardinals back on track with an 8-5 victory over Lukas Clemens and Kieran Cronin at No. 2. However, Mikko Rajamaki and Nikita Lis were unable to hold off the visitors from Thibodaux, falling 8-7 to Partha Adavelly and Bernard Wezeman at the top spot.

With regular No. 1 Michael Feucht out with an injury, Nikita Lis moved back up to the top line, but he was unable to force a deciding third set, falling 6-2, 7-5 to Adavelly. Laitinen moved up to No. 2, but he couldn’t hold on to some early momentum in losing 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 to Mertens, and Carl-Philip Lindqvist dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the third spot.

Rajamaki and Hoogenboezem also fell in straight sets as well, losing 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively, to Wezeman and Kieran Cronin. McMullan took home an opening set victory at No. 5 over Sam Meesen before ultimately losing 2-6, 6-3, 10-2.

The Cards will return to action on Tuesday as six-time defending Southland champions Texas A&M-Corpus Christi makes the trek to Beaumont.
