ARLINGTON, Texas -
Carlos Valdenebro registered the only point for the Lamar University men's tennis team in a 6-1 Southland Conference loss at UT Arlington on Thursday.
Valdenebro, playing No. 4 singles, posted a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Nicolas Moreno.
Valdenebro's match was one of three matches to go three sets, with UT Arlington coming out victorious in the other two. Soren Gontzka posted 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Denis Ermilov at No. 2 singles, while Yauheni Yakauleu rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Marton Horvath at No. 3 singles.
UT Arlington (9-10 overall, 3-2 Southland) opened the day by winning two of three doubles matches for the doubles point. Mikko Rajamaki and Bruno Snyder won at No. 3 doubles for Lamar (6-9, 0-3).
"UTA started strong in doubles at No. 1 and No. 2, going up 6-1 in both," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said.. "When that happens you dig too deep of a hole. We did play better at that point, but it wasn't enough. Bruno and Mikko did a good job of going up early and then getting the win.
"In singles we started good in most of matches. But didn't close out on opportunities we had."
Lamar faces Air Force in a non-conference match at 10 a.m. Friday at UT Arlington.
We now need to get ready for Air Force," Shankles said. "I'm looking for us to up our intensity level and have good starts."
