TYLER – Nikita Lis and Steven McMullan each picked up their first wins of the fall on Saturday as the Lamar men’s tennis team wrapped up play at the Tyler Junior College Quad Match.

“I thought we came out strong in singles and the first doubles match, but we couldn’t sustain it,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “We need to get in better shape and learn to maintain our focus throughout the day instead of half the day. All in all it was a good experience for us, and we’ll look to be better for the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational in a couple weeks.”

Due to a rainout of the event on Friday, the Cardinals began with a round of singles at 8 a.m. against Midwestern State. Lis picked up his first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Kyle Davidson, and Steven McMullan followed up in 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 fashion over Tomas Grejtak.

Carl-Philip Lindqvist was not as fortunate, falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to Kacper Boborykin, and Trey Crysel lost as well.

TJC and Lamar played each other in singles next, but the Cards lost at all four spots. Lindqvist dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Vaughn Hunter, and Lis fell 6-4, 6-4 to Mate Cutura. Crysel and McMullan fell to James Martell and Ryan Hudelson, respectively.

In doubles, the duos of Lis/McMullan and Crysel/Lindqvist each picked up 8-5 wins over Ouachita Baptist. The teams weren’t as successful vs. TJC, falling in 8-2 and 8-3 fashion, respectively.
