TYLER, Texas – Carl-Philip Lindqvist notched his first victory in a Lamar men’s tennis uniform on Saturday, and on Sunday he doubled his total with a singles and doubles victory against SMU on the second and final day of the TJC Quad Match.
After the duo of Steven McMullan and Bruno Snyder fell 8-3 to Nate Lammons and Micha Nowiki in the first doubles match, Lindqvist and Mikko Rajamaki responded with an 8-5 victory over Mason Harrel and Ross Peets.
“I think we came out a little flat in doubles,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “Mikko and Phil did well in the middle of their match to pull ahead and win, but Bruno and Steven couldn’t turn it around after a slow start. I think they’ve learned a big lesson.”
Lindqvist earned a singles victory later in the day when Harrel defaulted at No. 2 singles.
In other singles action, Rajamaki also notched a victory, joining Lindqvist in defeating his doubles opponent once more with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Peets at the fourth spot.
“I think we played a lot better in singles play,” Shankles said. “Mikko did a real good job of closing his opponent out. Bruno and Steven both battled hard, but they just didn’t have the start that they needed to beat tough opponents.”
Snyder and McMullan both fell in singles, with Snyder going down 6-3, 6-4 at the top spot to Nowiki, and Lammons knocking off McMullan at No. 3 6-2, 6-4.
The Cardinals will return to action next week at the Southern Miss Invite in Hattiesburg, Miss.
