Cardinal Tennis Wraps Up Opening Weekend at Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team finished the opening weekend of the 2006-07 season on Sunday, with newcomer Mario Janjic narrowly missing a singles championship, while the rest of the Cardinals had a solid showing.

Janjic lost in the finals of the singles green draw, falling to Tiago Santo of Wichita State 6-1, 6-3. On his way to the championship match Janjic dismissed Steven Shields of Texas A&M 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, Thomas Oliver of LCC 5-7, 6-3, 4-3 (ret.), Boris Gubic of Wichita State 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, Zach Taylor of Louisiana Lafayette 6-3, 6-2 and Alejandro de Muhco of New Mexico State.

Also participating in the green draw was Tyler Cobb who was knocked out in the round of 32 by Mehdi Benhammu of Radford 6-1, 6-1, Kody Duplechin lost in the round of 32 to Mike Beaty of Texas A&M 6-0, 6-2. In the green draw consolation Emmanuel Olivier got past James Wilson before being knocked out by Dennis Polyakov of Rice 6-1, 6-4, Duplechin fell to Jeff Pfeifer of New Mexico State 6-1, 6-0, Cobb dropped to Jon Greenberg of Rice 6-1, 6-3 and Andres Medina fell to Taylor Striplin of Alabama 6-2, 2-6 (10-5).

In the gold draw Filip Kanczula was knocked out of the men's consolation bracket by Saketh Myneni of Alabama 6-7, 6-2 (10-7), while Maciej Bogusz was defeated by David Galic of Baylor 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles play Brett Sticker and Duplechin were knocked out of the men's green draw by Duessner and Soriano of Tulsa 8-1 in the round of 16, while Medina and Olivier were defeated by Wofford and Wilson of Texas Tech 8-2, also in the round of 16. In the gold draw Kanczula and Bogusz were defeated by Omana and Bienzabos of UT-Arlington 8-2 in the round of 16, after defeating Mueller and Lukacs of Baylor 9-8 (3).

 

 

The Cardinals will be in action again next Saturday at the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla.
