BEAUMONT - Head coach Scott Shankles was pleased with his first-ever fall tournament at Thompson Family Tennis Center this weekend as the men's tennis program closed out play at the Cardinal Classic on Sunday.

"It's been a long three days, but I think we had a pretty good tournament," Shankles said. "I think that these last two days especially have shown the type of team we have. This was a good step for us, and now we'll spend the next two weeks getting ready for ITA Regionals."

The Cards began the day with a pair of doubles victories in the morning. Rob Lee and Steven McMullan picked up a 9-8 decision in the top flight over Jonathan Chang and Gustavo Gonzalez of Rice. Mikko Rajamaki and Juuso Laitinen, who was competing in the event unattached, kept it going with an 8-5 victory over Nico Mertens and Evan Karatzas of Nicholls to finish third in Flight 2.

In singles play, Rob Lee dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Louisiana's Jarred Wynan in Flight 1 to finish fourth.

Bruno Snyder bounced back from a loss on Saturday to pick up a 7-6, 6-1 decision over UTSA's Boburjon Kamiljanov in Flight 2, but Rajamaki lost 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 to Nicholls' James Russell in the third flight.

Laitinen played in the second flight and lost 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Chetan Panditi of UTPA.

The Cardinals will return to action in two weeks at the ITA Regional Championships in Ft. Worth, Texas.
