Lamar Men's Tennis Completes Play at ITA Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team took part in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships over the weekend, with sophomore Maciej Bogusz making a prolonged stay in the tournament before being knocked out on Monday morning.

Bogusz had the longest stay in the tournament for the Lamar men, making it to the quarter finals of the consolation bracket before being knocked out 6-1, 6-4 by Josh Zaval of the University of Texas. He defeated Zack Taylor of Louisiana Lafayette 7-6, 6-3 in round three and Ivan Avila of UT-Pan American 7-5, 6-1 in round four. In his opening match of the tournament, Bogusz was defeated by Clay Donato of Texas A&M 6-1, 6-2.

Filip Kanczula was the only Cardinal player to win a match in opening draw, advancing to the round of 16, before being knocked off by Ralph Knupfer of Rice, 6-0, 6-3. He opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Andrew Ulrich of TCU 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 64, and then knocked off Diego Mattor of UTA 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 32.

Emanuel Olivier lost in the fourth round of the consolation bracket when he retired the match due to injury against Shaun Ellison of Louisiana Lafayette, after defeating Ilie Babincivc of Southeastern Louisiana 4-6, 6-1, 10-7 in round three. He was defeated in the round of 64 to Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech 6-0, 6-0.

David Wanja was defeated by Daniel Gonzalez of SMU 6-4, 6-2 in round four of the consolation bracket. Wanja knocked off Brett Bernstein of UT-Pan American in round three 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (12-10) and Alberto Agis of UT-Arlington when Agis retired in the second round of the consolation bracket.

In doubles play the tandem of Bogusz and Kanczula lost to Radu Barbu and Cosmin Cotet of TCU 8-3, Wanja and Brett Sticker lost to Ellison and Taylor of Louisiana Lafayette 8-4 and Olivier and Andres Medina lost to Jason Mok and Christoph Muller of Rice 8-3.
