The Lamar University men's tennis team took part in the ITA South Central Regional Championship at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center, picking up several victories and a run to the consolation quarterfinals.
Filip Kanczula and David Wanja each picked up a win in the singles main draw, advancing to the round of 32 before being knocked out, while Maciej Bogusz made a run to the consolation semifinals for the second straight year.
Kanczula posted a 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 win over Alex Panayides of TCU to advance to the round of 32, where he was narrowly defeated by the No. 9 seed Ed Corie of Texas 7-6, 7-6. Wanja knocked off Daniel Bello of UT-Arlington 6-2, 6-1 before falling to No. 2 seed Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas 6-2, 6-1.
After advancing to the quarterfinals a year ago, Bogusz again made a run through the consolation bracket. After falling in the opening round to Dimitry Minkin of UT-Arlington 6-3, 6-2, Bogusz made his way to the consolation bracket. In his first match of the consolation he moved on as Jan Cingel of Texas A&M Corpus Christi withdrew due to injury before Bogusz knocked off Joe Hattrup of Texas Tech 1-6, 7-5; 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Bogusz did not play his quarterfinal match, withdrawing from the contest against Dimitry Novikov of Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
In doubles action Kanczula and Bogusz paired up to defeat Hattrup and Jeremy Reed of Texas Tech 8-3 before being defeated by David Galic and Denes Lukacs of Baylor 8-3 in the round of 16. The duo of Wanja and Emmanuel Olivier were knocked off by eventual champions Luis Diaz Barriga and Kellen Damico of the University of Texas 8-1.
The Cardinals will be back in action on November 2, when they play in the Louisiana Lafayette Tournament in Lafayette, La.
