The Lamar University men's tennis team closed out their fall schedule over the weekend, taking part in the Ragin' Cajuns Invitational at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The Cardinals were led by Tyler Cobb, who advanced to the semi finals of the singles black bracket with a pair of wins. His opening round victory was a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Seva Kotelanetz of Centenary, then he ousted Rohan Shetty of Nicholls State 6-2, 1-6, 7-6. Cobb dropped his semifinal match to eventual runner up Murillo Martins of Lafayette 6-2, 6-1.
Devin Harley also played in the black bracket, advancing to the consolation finals after being defeated by Alcorn State's Michael Okada 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round. He advanced to the semis with a walkover, and then rolled past Alcorn's Gordon Reaux 6-0m 6-0 to advance to the finals. In the finals he was defeated by Kotelanetz 7-5, 6-1.
In the white bracket Andres Medina picked up an opening round win over Mark Rodgman of Centenary 6-2, 6-3 before falling to LSU's Martel Campbell. Enrique Carrasco also picked up an opening round win over Yannick Shearron Hawkins of Alcorn State 6-4, 6-2 before falling to John Tragardh of LSU 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Nils Idwal also played in the white bracket, falling to Aziz Abdurazzakov of Alcorn State in the opening round. After a walkthrough advanced Idwal to the semi finals of the consolation, he defeated Shearron Hawkins to advance to the finals. In the consolation championship match, Idwal was defeated by Alex Ardent of Southern Miss 6-1, 6-4.
Competing in the red bracket were Emmanuel Olivier and Mario Janjic. Janjic was defeated by Radu Ionescu of Nicholls State 7-5, 6-2 in the opening round. Olivier lost his opening match to Jorge Delgado of ULL 6-2, 6-2 before falling to Abhaya Prakash of Alcorn 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 in the consolation semifinal.
In doubles play the Cardinals had a solid showing, as Medina and Olivier advanced to the consolation finals, while Idwal and Carrasco made it to the consolation semifinals. Cobb and Harley teamed up and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals.
Medina and Olivier dropped their opening match they fell to Rufykin and Castro of Grambling 8-0. After receiving a bye to advance to the quarterfinals, the duo defeated Lozona and Ahusa of Centenary and received a walkover to the finals. In the finals they were defeated by Banas and Olechowski of ULL.
Idwal and Carrasco dropped their opening round match to Martins and Delgado of ULL and advanced to the semi finals with a win over Reaux and Castillo of Alcorn State. The pair was knocked out of the tournament by Banas and Olechowski 8-3 in the semifinals.
Cobb and Harley dropped their opening round match to Poole and Ardent of Southern Miss 8-5 and entered the consolation bracket where they withdrew from doubles play.
With the fall schedule now complete, the Cardinals will be off until January 11, 2008 when they take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla.
