BEAUMONT, Texas - The Lamar University men's tennis team opens the 2012 spring season when it travels to Rice for a non-conference match at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Cardinals return five players from last season's squad that went 9-12. The Cardinals have plenty of veteran leadership with four seniors, including Carlos Valdenebro, who was a first-team all-Southland Conference selection at third doubles, and Marton Horvath, who was a second-team all-conference selection at No. 4 singles.

Lamar has four freshmen on the roster: Gabriel Aboitiz, who played in the fall season, and newcomers Mikko Rajamaki, Vukasin Roncevic and Bruno Snyder.

"We are looking forward to getting started," Lamar coach Scott Shankles said. "The guys are anxious and motivated. We had a good fall season implementing certain strategies and mechanics into the players' games."

Rice, a member of Conference USA, is ranked 39th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

"Rice will be a great gauge to see where we are," Shankles said. "They're disciplined, smart and well-coached."
