Men's Tennis aims for more success Saturday

Jan. 31, 2014

BEAUMONT - The Lamar men's tennis program picked up a pair of victories over Alcorn State last Sunday, and they'll look to repeat the success on Saturday as the Cardinals hit the road for another doubleheader in Lafayette, La., taking on Louisiana and Jackson State.

The Jackson State match, which was originally scheduled for Sunday at Thompson Family Tennis Center, was moved due to expected inclement weather in the area.

The Lamar men will look to be led by a trio of freshmen, beginning with Russian import Nikita Lis. The Kaliningrad native kicked off his debut season in impressive fashion last Saturday at Texas A&M, beating Junior Ore, a player that was once ranked as high as 19th in the world at the junior level, before returning home to pick up a second win on Sunday. Juuso Laitinen also has a pair of victories this season, and Michael Feucht will be looking to build off a strong fall campaign where he led all Cards in singles victories.

LU has also been a force to be reckoned with in doubles thus far this season as Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki are 2-0, and the tandem of Feucht and Laitinen is 2-1.

The Ragin' Cajuns enter Saturday's encounter with a 2-1 record, falling to Texas A&M in 7-0 fashion, but handing Southland member Incarnate Word a 6-1 loss and former Southland member UTPA a 7-0 decision.

Jackson State, which will take on New Orleans on Friday and Louisiana immediately before Lamar on Saturday, enters the weekend with an 0-4 record, falling to Mississippi State, Tulane, South Alabama and Southern Miss.

Saturday's match with Ragin' Cajuns is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Cajun Courts. The Cards and Tigers are slated to square off at 5:30 p.m.
