Lamar sophomore men's tennis player Mario Janjic and freshman women's tennis player Kaltrina Harbuzi, were selected as the first Aeropostale Southland Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week in 2007. This is the first player of the week award for both players.
Harbuzi, who has stepped in at No. 1 singles to start the season, due to an injury to reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year Andrea Martinez, has posted a 4-1 singles record and is 3-1 in doubles play, helping Lamar to a 4-1 record to start the season.
In her first action of the spring season, Harbuzi swept through Emily Arkel of Oral Roberts 7-5, 6-3, and Jenna Hirdle of UALR 6-2, 6-2. The following weekend, the Schneverdingen, Germany native picked up a pair wins, knocking off UTEP's Weronika Bloczynska, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 and UT-Pan American's Julia Cirne-Lima, 6-0 and 6-3.
Janjic has posted a 3-1 singles record in the No. 2 spot to start the season. On the opening weekend of the season for Lamar, Janjic knocked off No. 25 Tulsa's No. 34 ranked Will Gray 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, then followed that with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 35 SMU's David Kuczer.
His other win came against Oral Roberts' Frank Kaehler, who he took down 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. His only loss of the season came against Rain Roigas of Arkansas-Little Rock 6-7, 3-6. In doubles play Janjic has posted a 2-2 record.
The Lamar men will be back in action this weekend in Abilene, Texas, where they will face Abilene Christian and Oklahoma Christian on Friday, and UT-Pan American on Saturday. The Lady Cardinals will be back in action on February 15, when they take on Louisiana, Lafayette, in Lafayette, La. at 1 p.m.
