Men's Tennis hits the road for Lubbock
Feb. 8, 2013
BEAUMONT – The Lamar men’s tennis team will return to action this weekend with a pair of matches at McLeod Tennis Center on the campus of Texas Tech. The Cardinals will begin on Friday afternoon with a match vs. the 27th-ranked Red Raiders and conclude with a showdown against Wichita State on Sunday morning.
“We’re looking forward to playing two tough teams this weekend,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “It’s going to be a big challenge for us, especially on the road, but we definitely learned a lot playing a big opponent on the road after we went to Rice. We’ve talked about it a bit this week, but the guys have seen enough not to get intimidated. If the guys play smart and not beat themselves, it should be a good match.”
The Cards (1-2) will be looking to rebound after suffering a loss to Louisiana last weekend. Tech enters the weekend with a 3-3 record after dropping matches to No. 10 Mississippi State, No. 19 Stanford and No. 26 San Diego. The Red Raiders will take on Wichita State on Saturday morning before returning later in the day for LU.
Saturday will be the first time the two schools have met since 2009, and the Cards will be looking for their first victory over TTU since 1979.
The Shockers (2-1) come into the weekend on the heels to consecutive 7-0 wins over Cowley College and Bethany College. WSU opened its season with a 7-0 loss at the hands of eighth-ranked Oklahoma.
First serve on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m., and Sunday’s meeting is set for 10 a.m.
