The Lamar University men's tennis team went 2-1 over the weekend, defeating Oklahoma Christian 4-0 and the University of Texas Pan American 4-0, while falling to Abilene Christian 4-3 at the ACU Men's Indoor Classic at the Teague Special Events Center in Abilene, Texas.
The Cardinal men opened the weekend with a hard fought 4-3 loss to the Wildcats of Abilene Christian, the No. 22 ranked team in Division II.
The Wildcats took the doubles point by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, with Juan Nunez and Kevin Beedy knocking at Filip Kanczula and Maciej Bogusz 8-5 in the top spot and Ryan Hudson and Luke Hawk taking out Emmanuel Olivier and Tyler Cobb 8-2. The Cards did collect one win in doubles play, as the tandem of David Wanja and Mario Janjic posted an 8-7 win over Bryce Hicks and Hicks-Hutton Jones Jr.
In singles play the Cards and the Wildcats split the six matches, giving ACU the 4-3 win. Lamar received victories from Kanczula at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Bogusz won at No. 3 6-3, 6-4 (10-8) and Andres Medina who won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 over Hicks.
The Cardinal men quickly rebounded from their loss to ACU with a 4-0 win over Oklahoma Christian to close out Friday's action. After winning the nightcap on Friday, Lamar carried their momentum to a 4-0 win over Southland Conference foe UT-Pan American.
The Cardinals will be in action again on Friday, when they travel to San Antonio for a 2 p.m. showdown with Laredo Junior College, before taking on Prairie View A&M on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Prairie View, Texas.
