The Lamar University men's and women's tennis team will play host to the Centenary Gents and Ladies Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Cardinal Courts. Both teams will be in action again Saturday morning when they host Alcorn State at 9 a.m.
The Cardinal men are making their home debut for the 2006 season, while the women are hosting their second match at the Cardinal Courts, after dropping a tough 4-3 decision on Tuesday afternoon to Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Cardinal men enter the weekend with a 2-8 record, having won their last match, a 4-3 win over UT-Pan American. Filip Kanczula has collected five wins in singles play, playing exclusively at the No. 1 position to lead the Cardinals this season.
In doubles play Kanczula has paired with Maciej Bogusz for a 5-5 record this season. The two won their last match, an 8-3 win over the No.1 duo from Pan American.
The Cardinal women's team enters with a 3-2 record after dropping their match on Tuesday. They have been led by Andrea Martinez who has posted a 4-1 record on the season at No. 1 singles. She has also paired with Tara Shelander for a 4-1 record at No. 1 doubles.
Shelander, Maria Gutierrez and Pamela Martinez have each posted three wins in singles play so far this season while the doubles teams of Kendall Gibbs and Gutierrez have posted a 4-1 mark and Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez have gone 3-2.
The two matches this weekend will be the last of the season-opening 10 road matches for Lamar. Their first action at home will be next weekend when they host Centenary and Alcorn State on Friday and Saturday.
