BEAUMONT – The Lamar men’s tennis team will look to get back on track as the Cardinals make the trek to New Orleans for a non-conference tilt against Tulane on Saturday and the Southland opener vs. New Orleans on Sunday.
“We’ve picked up some losses, but we just need to continue to stay positive,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “Despite what our record shows, we have gotten better this season, especially in doubles. We’re going to continue to stay positive, and we’re looking forward to two more matches this weekend.”
Lamar currently has a 1-6 record.
Tulane is coming into the weekend with a 3-2 record, posting wins over Xavier (La.), New Orleans and Southern Miss. The lone two losses have come to top 50 opponents Middle Tennessee (No. 47) and Vanderbilt (No. 33). It will mark the third meeting between the two schools since 2010, with LU falling 5-2 in 2010 and 6-1 in 2011.
On Sunday, the Cards will take on a surging UNO program to open Southland Conference play. The Privateers are currently 3-2 as well, losing to Tulane and Louisiana, but they sit at 2-0 in SLC play after picking up wins over Oral Roberts last month and Nicholls earlier this month. It will be the fourth meeting between the two sides since 2009 with LU’s lone win coming in 4-2 fashion in 2010.
Overall, Lamar will be looking for its first win in an SLC-opener since a 4-3 victory over UTSA in 2006.
