BEAUMONT – After a break of nearly two weeks, the Lamar men’s tennis team will return to regular season action this weekend when it welcomes in Florida A&M and Radford for a pair of non-conference matches at Thompson Family Tennis Center.
“I feel really good about playing this weekend,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “We’ve had two weeks of really great practices, and we’ve been able to work on specific aspects of each player’s game. It’s allowed us to get a feel for where the team stands and where we can go from here.”
A fortnight ago, the Cardinals suffered a 5-1 loss to Tulane before opening Southland play against conference-leading New Orleans. Despite strong play up and down the line-up, Lamar ultimately fell victim to the Privateers, losing 5-2.
“We came up a little bit short at New Orleans,” Shankles said. “We were in every one of those matches, and I think that will give us a little bit more motivation this week. We’ve shown we can play well in these kinds of matches, now we just need to learn to seal the deal.”
Rob Lee’s star shone the brightest over the weekend, winning both of his matches at the top spot in the line-up. For the season, the senior has three victories at the top spot.
Mikko Rajamaki picked up the other win at UNO.
The Cardinals (1-8) will open against Florida A&M on Saturday, which is carrying a 3-8 record into the weekend. The Rattlers have won 6-1 in each of the past two seasons against Lamar. Sunday’s showdown with Radford will be the first in school history. The Highlanders are coming into the weekend with a 1-4 record.
Both matches are set to begin at 11 a.m.
