BEAUMONT – After getting back on track with a 6-1 win over Prairie View A&M last weekend, the Lamar men’s tennis team will look to keep things rolling this week with matches at Utah State and Weber State.
“We feel like this is going to be a very important weekend of matches,” head coach Scott Shankles said. “I think that they will be comparable to some teams that we’ll face in conference, and if we can continue to play to our ability, I think we’ll be successful.”
Utah State and Lamar will square off first on Saturday. The Aggies carry a 4-7 record, but a 3-1 mark at home. Sven Poslusny leads the squad with a 7-3 record, and Fredrik Peterson stands out among the rest with a 5-6 mark.
USU and Lamar have never played each other.
Sunday’s meeting will be a little more familiar to the Cardinals as LU previously played Weber on a neutral site in 2011. Rob Lee and Bruno Snyder each played a role in the match, with Lee falling at No. 2 singles and Snyder picking up a tight victory in the sixth spot.
WSU is 4-8 this season, but all four victories have come at home, and the singles wins are evenly distributed with four players boasting of five or more wins.
“We played Weber two years ago, and we’ve never played Utah State,” Shankles explained. “So we’re not really that familiar with either team. Sometimes that can be an advantage because it forces the players to focus on their own game instead of being concerned with what the other guy might do. We’re looking forward to it.”
