BEAUMONT – After nearly a two week break from action, the Lamar men’s tennis team will make its return to Thompson Family Tennis Center on Thursday morning as it plays host to former Southland rival UTSA at 10 a.m.
The Cards, which enter the match with a 10-8 record, are off to one of their best starts in years, and the level of play at home has been a major contributor. LU is 4-1 in Beaumont this season, which includes the first win over UT Arlington since 1987.
A trio of freshmen helms the LU lineup, beginning with German import Michael Feucht, who leads the team with a 10-6 record. Nikita Lis has also been impressive, going 9-4, and Juuso Laitinen is 9-8. All three have picked up wins at the No. 1 position.
Feucht and Laitinen have been strong in doubles play, combining for a 10-3 mark, and the duo of Mikko Rajamaki and Jeandre Hoogenboezem is 6-7.
Rajamaki has been the standout veteran, clinching a number of matches this season from the No. 5 spot. He’s 6-8 on the year, and former All-Southland honoree Carl-Philip Lindqvist is 5-10.
Sophomores Steven McMullan and Trey Crysel each have three wins apiece, and freshman Hoogenboezem has a pair.
UTSA enters the match with an 8-11 record but have won five of the last seven matches.
