BEAUMONT – After closing out the non-conference season with its first-ever victory over UTSA, the Lamar men’s tennis team will be looking to translate the form into Southland play, which will begin on Saturday at Oral Roberts.
The Cardinals have posted an 11-8 record this season, marking just the third time that the school has reached the double-digit win plateau since the retirement of all-time winningest coach Ron Wesbrooks in 1987. All 11 victories have come against Division I competition, which is the most in that time span.
After being carried for much of the season by the freshman trio at the top of the lineup, the script was flipped in Thursday’s win over UTSA as the duo of Michael Feucht and Nikita Lis fell at the top two spots. However, Juuso Laitinen picked up the clinching victory at the third spot to secure the 4-2 win.
Both Laitinen and Feucht now have 10 singles victories on the season and have combined for another 10 in doubles. Lis has nine on the year.
Carl-Philip Lindqvist, Steven McMullan and Mikko Rajamaki all picked up wins vs. UTSA, and the group has a combined 17 victories this season.
Oral Roberts enters the weekend with a 4-9 record but riding a three-match winning streak.
First serve on Saturday is set for 2 p.m. in Tulsa.
