BEAUMONT – Rob Lee will look to close out his final regular season home match in style on Friday as the Lamar men’s tennis team will celebrate its annual Senior Day with a conference showdown vs. Texas-Pan American at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
The Cardinals (3-14, 1-1 Southland) will be looking to replicate the success they enjoyed vs. Oral Roberts at the city complex last weekend, which included victories on all six singles courts, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory for Lee. A senior out of Brighton, England, Lee is coming into the encounter with 30 career wins in dual match play and six this season at the top spot.
The match will be of the utmost importance to both teams as UTPA enters with a 7-14 record and a 1-2 mark in conference play. With a win, either team would clinch a spot in the Southland Championship Tournament, which is scheduled to be played in Beaumont later this month.
All-time, UTPA leads the Lamar 38-27-3 in a series that dates back to 1958. However, the Cards have won each of the last two meetings, including a 5-2 decision last year. Rob Lee and Mikko Rajamaki each picked up wins in the match as the Cards took all but one singles point.
Following Friday’s match, the Cards will hit the road for Thibodaux to take on Nicholls on Sunday. The Colonels are 7-10 this season with a 2-2 mark in conference play. The two sides have played 4-3 matches in each of the past three years, but Lamar has taken just one, winning in 2011.
Due to ongoing re-surfacing work at Thompson Family Tennis Center, Friday’s match will be played at the Municipal Tennis Center off of College St. and first serve is set for 3 p.m. A ceremony honoring Rob Lee will take place in the intermission between doubles and singles play.
