Lady Cards Down Nicholls 6-0, Men Fall to UTPA 4-3

April 12, 2009

The Lamar University women's tennis team closed out their road schedule Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 win at Nicholls State while the men's team dropped a 4-3 decision to UT Pan American in their final home contest.

The Lady Cardinals collected improved to 9-1 in Southland Conference play and 14-5 overall with the win, their seventh straight win.

"This win capped off a great weekend in which my team really fought hard and played great tennis," head coach David Wong said. "It's nice to have this team playing this way as we wind down the regular season and get ready for the post season.

The LU women will close out the regular season with a pair of home matches next week. They take on Lee College on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and will finish with Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday at noon.

"Hopefully we will continue to play well and finish the regular season on a strong note as we head into the Southland Conference Tournament," Wong said. "Saturday will be senior day and we'll recognize our only senior Maria Gutierrez who has been great this season. I hope we have a large crowd there to cheer us on."

The Lamar men's team dropped a hard fought 4-3 decision Saturday, falling to the Broncs to drop their season record to 7-11 and the SLC record to 0-4.

The men will be back in action on Thursday at 5 p.m. when they take on Texas A&M Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi, Texas.
