BEAUMONT – As the Lamar men’s tennis team begins preparations for the Southland Championships next week in Beaumont, it faces one final test, taking on the 58th-ranked Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on the road on Thursday.
With a 3-0 record, the Islanders are looking to lock up the Southland’s top seed in next week’s event, but Lamar will be trying to toss a roadblock on those hopes after taking home victories in two of the last three conference matches, including a 6-1 decision over Oral Roberts and a 4-3 win against UTPA.
After falling to Nicolls last time out, Lamar’s positioning as the four-seed is set with a 2-2 conference record. Overall, the Cards are 4-15 this year.
TAMUCC enters with a 13-7 mark overall.
If LU is to be successful, the bulk of the responsibility will likely rest on the shoulders of senior captain Rob Lee. The Englishman has been impressive in conference play this season, registering three wins at the No. 1 spot before falling at Nicholls over the weekend, and on the year, he’s picked up seven victories.
The play of Steven McMullan and Carl-Philip Lindqvist will also be pivotal as the duo has combined for 12 singles victories and four in conference play.
First serve on Thursday is set for 2 p.m.
